  • Targhee

    Targhee

Montana Targhee wool is a new offering at Mosaic Moon. The yarn is of a medium-thickness, quite soft, and surprisingly durable. It is similar to the Maine Organic, yet even softer.

I believe the wool to be very humanely raised and was given this statement about the sheep this wool comes from. Carolyn Green states, "Our sheep are raised on our ranch. We have about 100 registered Targhee breeding ewes. As we live on a high prairie (5200') in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains, they graze in the native pastures and hay fields through out the year. They are in the corral and lambing barn from mid-March to mid-May after they are sheared and for the lambing period. When the grass is once again green, we turn the ewes and their lambs out to pasture.

Along with our emphasis on our bright white wool (through genetic selection, and also we live in a climate that helps), we raise breeding stock. All ewe lambs are kept and sold for breeding purposes at about 1 1/2 years of age, and about 1/2 of the ram lambs are grown up to sell for breeding stock as well. "

Here is a quote about the mill and spinning of the yarn, from my supplier: "The mill that processes our yarns and roving is a small mill in Alberta, Canada. It is a working museum, all the machinery is very old, and the yarns are spun on a Spinning Mule. The wool is gently washed, no harsh chemicals are used, and some of the natural lanolin remains in the yarns. Mule spinning, combined with our soft Targhee wool, creates a lovely, lofty soft yarn. "

This is my favorite non-organic yarn!
